Preface

The stories collected here are stories from the edge of human existence. Read them to understand the remarkable capacities of humans, which enable them to survive. Read them to help you understand the internal world of people on the very edge, to understand the even greater problems, which often face a person when they need to use mental health services. And read them to get a glimpse of the reality of mental health services, behind the rhetoric. This book contains much excellent writing, often moving and always, ultimately sad.

Editors Note

The collected stories of "Mind Machine" differ from those of the previous Local Voices publication—"Doorways In The Night"—in that they are essentially works of fiction. However, the themes of mental health and survival essentially form the basis of each of the stories and poems.
